The role

The ORX Assistant Research Manager role is a challenging and rewarding opportunity to work with the foremost figures from the Operational Risk industry. The successful individual will support elements of the ORX Research Programme, helping create consensus and facilitating change at an industry level.

The Assistant Research Manager will support the Research and Information team in the delivery of the ORX Research Programme. The ORX Research Programme provides Operational Risk Measurement and Management research projects to the financial services industries. These range from investigating and determining risk management best practice through to original thought leadership research, and include qualitative and quantitative studies. An important focus of the role will be to assist in the development of ORX projects, products and initiatives, particularly focusing on the Scenarios programme.

The Assistant Research Manager is an effective manager, a skilled facilitator, and a good communicator.

The team

This role is within ORX’s Research and Information team. This team conducts evidence-based research by collecting data from our members typically through industry surveys. We publish thought leadership papers and deliver benchmarking studies to ORX members.

Main duties and responsibilities

Key responsibilities for the Assistant Research Manager include:

  • To work in small teams to deliver the ORX research programmes, in particular the Scenarios programme
  • To research specific aspects of Operational Risk practice and methodology
  • To assist in the work and relations of ORX Working Groups (specifically the Scenarios Working Group)
  • To assist in writing research proposals
  • To support the development of surveys and other ways of collecting information
  • To assist in drafting research reports
  • To communicate research findings with the ORX constituency
  • To build strong relationships with all ORX participant members
  • To present research findings at ORX forums
  • Where required, to be a relationship manager for a number of firms ensuring members are kept up to date and championing their needs.
  • To support in the organisation and delivery, as well as presenting at any relevant forums and events organised by ORX.

Skills and knowledge


  • Degree or equivalent and / or validated experience which shows an ability to operate effectively in the research environment.
  • Experience of working in management and research for at least 5 years
  • Demonstrate success in the delivery of research projects
  • Track record of intellectual curiosity and entrepreneurship
  • Interest in economics and finance
  • Demonstrable experience of leading the development of engaging data analysis and reporting
  • Capable to understand and summarise complex concepts
  • Success in influencing senior management
  • Good IT skills, in particular Microsoft Office applications and web-based communication
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, particularly those acquired in working with remote customers and suppliers
  • Handle confidential material with highest discretion
  • Work autonomously and pro-actively
  • Self-motivated and highly organised
  • Able to cope under pressure and prioritise tasks
  • Reliable and trustworthy


  • Operational risk qualification and knowledge.
  • Experience of operating in an international environment
  • Experience in project management
